Fashion Trends in the breeding of daylilies                Text and photo: Eurohosta, January 2018

Daylilies offer a wide range of flower shapes and colours. But even they have obvious fashion trends.

It takes a lot of time and effort to make a bloom as dark as possible. Similar efforts are known, for example, with roses. For a long time, breeders have aimed at producing dark blue or black roses. This is also the case with daylilies. Older dark cultivars such as H. Black Stockings, H. Ed Murray, H. Purplelicious, or beautiful Bela Lugosi, introduced in 2018, are completed by the novelty of H. Longfields Black Magic. The future will show if these daylilies will meet the expectations. One aim is also to produce a completely white bloom. We already offer the near-white cultivars H. Cool It, H. Gentle Shepherd, H. Heavenly Curls, and H. Voila Francois. In these cultivars the flower has a cream tinge to it, and is not completely white. So there's still room for improvement, breeders…

Daylilies with significantly curled edges appeared on the market about 20-30 years ago, and are still some of the most beautiful. In 2018 we offer you several beautiful cultivars in this category. We definitely must mention H. Spacecoast Better Late, with a beautiful lavender flower and a creamy, massive edge. What will certainly please you are H. Evelyn Kleoris, Enchanted April, and Barbara Barnes. Among older ones there is still the beautiful Darla Anita in our offer. Remember that a daylily with a bigger edge performs better in warmer conditions. Older plants are always more beautiful. Many growers have found expensive daylilies with huge edges to be frustrating when brought into our central European conditions, since these were grown in Florida greenhouses. In recent years, the interest of customers has turned to pastel flowers of easier to grow diploid cultivars.

Since 2007, when G. Doorakian registered the cultivar Rose F. Kennedy, many have fallen in love with the simplicity of its bloom. This cultivar has won many competitions: Stout Silver Medal: winner 2016, Runner-up 2015, Merit award: 2013, Honourable mention: 2010, RWM: 2013. This is the start to the already forgotten "spider" flowers. For the year 2018, we offer many new cultivars like H. Curly Cinnamon Windmill, H. De Colores, H. Exotic Spider, H. Fingers of Time, H. Heavenly Mr. Twister, H. Lemon Madeline, H. Phial of Galadriel, H. Rebekah's Gothic Spider, H. Red Suspenders, H. Royal Celebration, H. Spiral Charmer, H. Zanti Mis, and many others.

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to the striking novelty of Spacecoast Sea Shells. The contrast of purple and cream on its blooms will surely command your attention.
