The tradition of "Hosta Days" at Záhradníctvo Hosta was established in 2017. Inspired by other companies, we decided to invite hosta enthusiasts and anyone interested in hosta planting. We were delighted to have several attendees, including an elderly lady who traveled 200 km by train to see our hostas and visit our growing areas. Her dedication was truly motivating for us. Despite the event not being economically profitable, we realized it was a great idea and decided to organize Hosta Days again in the following year.

Continuing the tradition, we organized Hosta Days also in 2023 (in June 2-3), marking the seventh consecutive year. Similar to the previous five events, we held this seventh edition in our garden shop area (the first one was hosted at our production area). Visitors flocked to our event from various parts of Slovakia, including Košice, Bratislava or Žilina. We have had also visitors from Czech Republic and Hungary. Many shared stories of waking up early to ensure they arrived on time. There was a lot of discussions about hostas, their care, problems by growing them and about many other hosta issues. The majority of our visitors are loyal attendees, returning every year. However, we were also thrilled to welcome first-time visitors, indicating a growing interest in hostas in the public. It's rewarding to see that our efforts have contributed to this trend.

What did our visitors have seen this year? We had a stunning selection of 320 hosta cultivars available for sale during the event. Additionally, approximately 30-40 cultivars were on display, providing visitors with cultivars exclusively sold through our e-shop or propagated for future availability.

One hosta that stole the spotlight was Hosta Mito-no-Hana, with its green leaves and creamy yellow variegation. Although not yet available for sale, we have will have few pieces for sale in the near future. Another favorite was Hosta Valley's Lemon Limbo, admired for its beautiful large yellow leaves with red stems and captivating rippled edges. Excitingly, several plants of this hosta cultivar will be accessible through our e-shop starting December 2023. Visitors were also impressed by other Valley's hostas, including Valley's Adonis or Valley's Cloudbuster.

Buffalo cultivars, such as Hosta Buffalo Spring Beauty, Buffalo Ice Mouse, and Buffalo Designer Genes, also garnered significant attention. A limited number of these cultivars were available for purchase during the event, with all three becoming available in our e-shop from December 2023. Other Buffalo hosta cultivars, like Buffalo Blue Lake (scheduled as a novelty for 2024) and Buffalo Misty Rain, were exclusively showcased for display.

In addition to our extensive selection, we proudly introduced rare hostas from the USA, including hosta We back the Badge, Cosmic Wow, Giantland Butterfly Wings or hosta Giantland Puckered Crevice. Jeff Miller, the originator of hosta Giantland Puckered Crevice from the American company Land of Giant Hosta Farm, described it as the most puckered hosta ever seen. “Everyone who sees it, wants it”. A limited number of this exceptional cultivar will be available in our e-shop starting December 2023.

Among the eye-catching cultivars, visitors couldn't miss the impressive hosta California Gold Rush or the beloved hosta Frisian Pride, which has become somewhat of a mascot for our exhibition over the years. Hosta Frisian Pride's yellow leaves cascading down gracefully and in addition it endures the summer sun quite well. Placed prominently in a large flower pot, it catches eyes of every visitor to the hosta exhibition.

Many of the cultivars available for sale found their way into the gardens of our visitors. Hostas such as June, Praying Hands, Bridal Fall, Dancing Queen, Blue Mouse Ears, Great Expectation, Thunderbolt, and numerous others garnered great interest and were highly sought after.
As a token of appreciation, every customer who purchased hostas totaling over 20 euros received an additional hosta plant free of charge, allowing them to expand their collection and enjoy even more varieties in their gardens.

We are deeply grateful to all the visitors who contributed to the success of Hosta Days 2023, making the event memorable and reinforcing our dedication to cultivating these remarkable plants. It was an honor and a pleasure for us to meet both, familiar faces and new customers. For those who have taken home hostas from us, we have full confidence that plants will thrive in your area and grow into real beauties.

As always, mark please the first weekend of June on your calendars for a journey to Žiar nad Hronom and a visit to the VIII. Hosta Days in 2024.
